Redbacks

Redbacks are Australia's best known spider. They appear in songs and they even have a softball club and a beer named after them.

Redbacks live all over Australia but are less common in colder regions like Tasmania. They thrive in populated areas.

Hundreds of bites are reported each year, but less than 30 percent require antivenom treatment, before an antivenom was available, Redback bites caused about a dozen known deaths.

'Only female Redbacks usually bite people' - 'the males are generally too small', This is a fact that the Men's team dispute vigorously...

Club History !

Redbacks Softball Club was formed a number of years ago to compete in Masters Softball events and has been in operation for over 10 years.

The Club has been participating in Masters Softball in the 35+, 45+ and 55+ age groups and has attended many tournaments over the years.

Redbacks has grown from one men’s team which was formed in 1994 to compete at the World Masters Games in Brisbane, to our recent attendance at the 2006 Pan Pacific Games on the Gold Coast where we entered six teams.

We are a group of sports loving men and women who participate in Master’s Softball events in Australia (and sometimes overseas) such as:

  • Australasian Masters Games - held every two years in capital cities around Australia, with the next scheduled for Adelaide, October 2007
  • Pan Pacific Masters Games - held at the Gold Coast, Queensland alternate years to Australasian Masters, with the next scheduled for November 2008
  • World Masters - held every four years at a Worldwide venue, with the next scheduled for Sydney in 2009

In addition Redbacks travel to many local events in South East Queensland. In the past teams have travelled interstate to Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Newcastle to name a few, in addition 3 Redbacks teams travelled to Edmonton, Canada for the 2005 World Masters Games.

New and returning members are most welcome to join Redbacks as we continue on our Masters adventures.

Our teams have been most successful in acquiring Gold, Silver or Bronze Medals in their relevant age groups but more importantly there have been many good times and friendships made.
